    1837 Hard Times Token
    "I Take The Responsibility"
    Here is an 1837 copper Hard Times Token, created during America's first Great Depression when coinage was scarce. These tokens were privately made and traded as currency until coins became readily available to the public again. The subjects of the tokens included political commentary or merchant advertising. The United States government temporarily allowed the use of Hard Times Tokens as money because the economic situation was so dire.
    This is one of the "Jackass with LL.D" tokens that shows President Andrew Jackson on the obverse holding a sword in one hand and a purse in the other, calling out a warning that the same person should not control the military and the Treasury at the same time. This side also features Jackson's quote, "I take the responsibility."
    The reverse satirizes Jackson as a jackass with LL.D. on its side. This was in reference to Jackson's honorary doctorate awarded by Harvard, and the derision his foes felt on the matter. This side also references a quote from Jackson, that he interpreted "the Constitution as I understand it." Jackson was known as stubborn and obstinate, but an admirer said he had "Roman firmness", and this phrase is also on the reverse. This particular token is type W-10-330a and HT-70
