Description
1837 Hard Times Cent Token
Wall Street. BUILT 1827 BURNT 1835
This token was emergency money issued by a private company to compensate for the lack of small change during the Jacksonian era economic depression.
The token's reverse displays the facade of the original Merchants' Exchange building at 55 Wall Street, New York City. The description in exergue states: BUILT 1827/ BURNT 1835, referring to the great New York fire in 1835.
The obverse shows the inscription MILLIONS FOR DEFENCE around, and in the center of a wreath, NOT/ONE/CENT/ FORTRIBUTE. The word NOT has a dual meaning and got the manufacturer of the token out of hot water with the Federal Government's ban on making currency.
The "tribute" part loosely referred to the XYZ affair of 1797 in which French officials (identified as X, Y and Z) attempted to exact bribes from an American delegation before negotiations with the French government could begin. The episode contributed to the outbreak of the Quasi-War between France and the United States (1798-1800).
