Description
VERY UNUSUAL 1837 HARD TIMES TOKEN !!!ONE OF A KIND !
Check the scan showing a "normal size" Hard Times Token compared to this monstrous one.
Design looks to match 1837 Hard Times Token, HT 48 !!!!
Struck on a vastly oversize planchet weighing 13.7 grams or 210 grains. 30+ mm in diameter.
Check this out.
1) Wrong size planchet. > Dramatically oversize and over weight !! Quite possibly a trial piece, pattern, or a mint employee gone wild.
2) BROADSTRUCK !! > Planchet "squirted out" the side of the dies !!
3) Rotated dies. > 60 degree clockwise rotation between obverse and reverse !!! See first two scans for rotation amount.
4) "Reeds" > Edge has scattered sections of "reeds" likely hand made. Most of the rim is wide and "square" with nice brown color showing.
5) Large area of thinner unstruck planchet from about 11 o'clock to 4 o'clock protruding out of the reverse rim.
Some detail is "muted" or affected by porosity on both sides. Date is not seen. Obviously, made from genuine Hard Times Token die set on a monster planchet.
POSSIBLY UNIQUE ITEM PERFECT FOR AN ADVANCED COLLECTOR.
