1837 Hard Times Token"Liberty - Not One Cent"
Here is an 1837 copper Hard Times Token, created during America's first Great Depression when coinage was scarce. These tokens were privately made and traded as currency until coins became readily available to the public again. The subjects of the tokens included political commentary or merchant advertising. The United States government temporarily allowed the use of Hard Times Tokens as money because the economic situation was so dire.
This is one of the "Liberty - Not One Cent" tokens that shows a Liberty Head imitation on the obverse, and the inscription "Millions for Defence - Not One Cent For Tribute" on the reverse. Note how the design cleverly bypasses counterfeiting accusations with the central "Not One Cent" wording. The sentiment of the token began during the John Adams administration when the French foreign minister Talleyrand said that attacks on American shipping would stop if payments were made. The phrase "Millions for defence, not one cent for tribute" became a rallying cry. The expression was later utilized when Barbary pirates in the Mediterranean Sea offered the same "money for safe passage" deal. This particular token is HT-46
