Description
1837 Hard Times Token"Merchants Exchange (new)"
Here is an 1837 copper Hard Times Token, created during America's first Great Depression when coinage was scarce. These tokens were privately made and traded as currency until coins became readily available to the public again. The subjects of the tokens included political commentary or merchant advertising. The United States government temporarily allowed the use of Hard Times Tokens as money because the economic situation was so dire.
This token honors the reopening of the new Merchants Exchange in 1842 after a catastrophic fire destroyed the original in 1835, and is identified as the "Merchants' Exchange (new)" token. This token has only one version. The obverse depicts the new structure and the reverse describes the address and says "New York Joint Stock Exchange Company." This token has been authenticated by Accugrade, and is safely contained in a protective plastic holder. The plastic holder has a surface crack but the token inside remains unharmed. *** The photos are of the actual token you will receive.***
