    Description

1837 United States Liberty Not One Cent for Tribute Hard Times Token.  VF  What sets this coin apart from others I've seen is the condition. I don't see what I would call pitting.  I don't see that the surfaces have a problem with porosity.  The coin has rich dark brown problem free surfaces.  There are many varieties of hard times tokens.
At this time in history, many small banks failed. Soon gold and silverdisappeared from circulation. People still had copper cents butsupplies were thinning.
Private minters responded to this development by creatingHard Time Tokens. They are about the size of a normal cent. Many have imagesdepicting the political satire of the era.
By this time, Andrew Jackson's vice president,  Martin Van Buren, was the elected president inoffice. The period of economic hardship, the Panic of 1837, during Van Buren's presidencycame to be known as the "Hard Times".
