  • Hand woven acrylic: tribal shawl

    Description

This is a newly made Konyak Naga’s body cloth, traditionally worn by men of that tribe only; such a design was distinctive and helped to identify one Naga tribe from another, made necessary because of their headhunting culture. Every stripe and change in design indicated status or merit, and had meaning to the tribe. This particular design was usual, but not the common, everyday pattern that would have been worn. Rich or otherwise accomplished men might have had more work woven into their shawls, as in the case of the picture included in this offering of a textile worn by the giver of feasts of merit.
Entirely hand woven of fine acrylic fiber, this shawl, like a good rug, is tightly woven and has the feel of soft cotton. It measures approximately 80” x 41”, although each piece can vary slightly. It can provide great warmth through the winter as well as serving as a beautiful ornamental covering for any type of furniture.
Other pieces are available, but the exact size and tightness of the weave may vary slightly. The design, however, will be consistent.
